1929 - Cape Gate Fence & Wire Works (Pty) Limited founded
in Parow, Western Province by the Kaplan / Kushlick families.
1962 - Cape Gate (Pty) Limited established by the purchase
of a small wire netting plant on 15 hectares in Vanderbijlpark,
Gauteng Province.

History:

1962 - Cape Gate
(Pty) Limited was established
by the purchase of a small netting
plant on 15 hectares in Vanderbijlpark.
1967 - The Sharon
Wire Mill division established
to produce uncoated and galvanized
wire, welded mesh, diamond
mesh, barbed wire, field
fence and other products.
1975 - The Davsteel division
established, and rolling mills
for the production of wire
rod, re-bar and rounds commissioned.
1980 - An EAF Meltshop consisting
of a 45 ton electric arc furnace,
casting machine and associated
plant for steel manufacturing
was commissioned.
1981 - The establishment of
the Orenwire division
to produce specialist wire
products.

Various plant upgrades/acquisitions
facilitating present production of:
1999:
- 420 000 t/a of billets via the
EAF route.
- 260 000 t/a Rod Mill products.
- 180 000 t/a Bar Mill products.
- 160 000 t/a wire and wire products
|
December 2000:
EAF upgrade to enable the production of 465 000 t/a of billets.

From scrap to finished steel…………

The Davsteel division
of Cape Gate (Pty) Limited introduced
two steel shredding units in 1988.
This changed the face of scrap processing
in South Africa, which resulted in
increased capacity and full utilisation
of the most advanced mini mill technology.
The shredding units are currently
operated by Universal Metal Shredding
Company (Pty) Limited and Universal
Recycling Company (Pty) Limited.

The Sharon Wire Mills division of Cape
Gate (Pty) Limited processes wire rod into
uncoated wire, galvanized wire, and wire
products for a variety of markets. These
products conform to international quality
standards, and are manufactured from wire
rod bearing the South African Bureau of
Standards mark.
